Casita Roja
Casita Roja

Casita Roja is located on the beachfront between the villages of Chuburna and Chelem, west of Progreso on
the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula, about an hour's drive from Merida's international airport (MID).

This area of the Yucatan coast is mostly summer and vacation residential homes.  There are virtually no
hotels, condos, or other commercial development.  It is generally very quiet and low-key.

The beach itself is white coral sand, and has a very gentle slope.  You can walk out a 100 yards easily, with
water only to your chest.  This is not an area for surfers.  It's great for kids, and others who are not great 'open
water' swimmers.  The water is warm all year.

There are small stores and family restaurants in both Chelem and Chuburna.  Progreso, about 20 minutes
away, has more options and nightlife as well.  Merida is a major cosmopolitan city of approximately 700,000,
and is less than an hour away.

Mayan ruins are extensive throughout the area, and major sites (Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Mayapan, etc) are just a
few hours away.  The Yucatan area is excellent for bird watching, and major nature preserves (Celestun and
Rio Largatos) are nearby to the west and east of us.  Flamingos, who nest in these areas, are sometimes seen
flying along the beach on their way from one to the other.
